The story of a peculiar media dwarf, the dream of cyber gamers, waiting for the UFOs, and a Congolese-Belgian man fighting in the Serbian war. The programme of the Dutch Film Weekend included documentaries, too, of stunning themes, parallel to short features and features. More
At the opening of the Rembrandt exhibition, speeches were made by Dutch cultural attaché in Budapest Jan Kennis, Ildikó Ember, the curator of the exposition, and László Baán, director of the Museum of Fine Arts. The painting – Saint Peter’s Denial – that came to Budapest from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has pieces around it that support reception. The focused exhibition will teach you to see and refine your compulsive greed. More
Currently, you can see two short video installations at Studio Gallery. András Ravasz and Guido van der Werve were born on different dates and in different places, and perhaps that is also a reason why they speak about the same though in different manners. More
The film Winter Silence, a Dutch-Swiss feature by Sonja Wyss, is set in a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, in a mountain village in Switzerland, and offers balladistic and spacious silences, and strong images. More
47 spectators. Hungary-The Netherlands, played on home field: 27-20. Two shockingly good concerts in one place and one evening. Gonzo and Voicst at Merlin. More
Anton Corbijn is a photographer, primarily, regardless of his films, music videos and stage designs. His images burst open the walls of the exhibition space. The opening at Ludwig was arranged in a way that eternal rock and roll was sounding from, if not from his pictures, the loudspeakers outside. More
Monday evening, I could enjoy Balázs József Quintet in concert at Jelen, after the presentation of the Encyclopaedia of Stupidity and the performance of Opal Theatre. The Dutch had a great time, even that smaller group of them in the jazz room. More
“Damn, a real hero” is what I became. I happened to go to a theatre performance at Trafó, and could play a star on stage. Space Theatre turned me into a hero, sending me through the hero manufacture of Worldwideheroshow. The result was a special one: egomasseuse and scandal-maker. More
Last year’s festival featured three dramas and as continuation of this ‘tradition’ those interested can get familiar with the scripts of two contemporary Dutch plays this year, too. Judith Herzberg’s play is entitled: Wound. More
Loveable jazz is best when playing at an intimate, discrete location that creates the demand for communication – a place where music doesn’t need to beat anything. On Sunday, energy in its complete form, a fine mixture of carnal and aerial (and many other things) was presented to the audience at Jelen. More
Fáklya Klub (“Torch Club”) has nearly sunk into oblivion amongst the Budapest youth. The once cultural stronghold of the bygone system was first hailed as a scene for retro-parties, and later became a forgotten spot in city entertainment – but the Budapest Soul, Amsterdam beat has succeeded in re-establishing the ambiance of this legendary building, at least for this weekend. More
The 16th International Book Festival in Budapest echoes foreign languages. It’s an increasingly multi-layer cultural forum, present at Millenáris this year again. Jaap Scholten, an aristocrat from the Low Coutries living in Budapest, is an interesting colour on the palette of writers. More
Toneelgroep Amsterdam, the national theatre company of the Netherlands performed Opening Night by Cassavetes at the National Theatre of Hungary. The play is the staged version of the film, which is already a bold move, not to mention that we find out only later that we cannot leave our seats for 2,5 hours. The experience was good and enjoyable, so much that even time became faster, unfortunately. The play also addressed the issue of time, then let us go on. (As it was not a conventional performance, the review does not follow the traditional patterns either.) More
The afternoon of screening and discussion, already heavy with Joy Division nostalgia, turned into a hilarious craze of concerts. Closer to Curtis, De Staat and J. D. Isolated took to the stage, while the audience in the depths of the ship mocked the Manchester audience of the eighties and the choreographers of renowned pantomime theatres. “As if my heart had been its very source, troubled, wise was the Danube, mighty force” More
Control, Anton Corbijn’s film is based on sad facts, and it recalls the tragedy of Ian Curtis, the singer of Joy Division, who died at a young age. The younger ones are crying, while older ones take a pleasant trip to time, back to the roots of punk. We now walk a murky, industrial landscape, and we listen to good music. We can even meet the director after the screening. A gorgeous afternoon on water. More
The Large Movement – a movie that’s being screened when it’s being watched. A movie about the outside (Moszkva tér) that you can see inside (movie saloon in a container). A Chinese theater run by Dutch movie makers featuring Hungarian „thespians” in the luxurious movie shack on Moszkva tér. More
Jan Kennis, the Cultural Attaché of the Netherlands Embassy, opened the Festival in Jelen Bisztró (the actual Headquarters of the cultural event series) and highlighted its merits already known from last year. Speaking as concisely as the situation allowed he won the appreciation of the audience, eagerly waiting for the music to enchant them. Not to no avail. More
The models, left nonchalant by the squeezing throng at the Tour de Mode, were glissading breezily, demonstrating that nowadays it is more comfortable to ride a bike than a wrecked horse. In the saddle of a racing bike you take the atavistic position that is perfectly suitable for your physique. At the fashion show in Merlin, you could get a glimpse of what kind of gears you should wear to look well-dressed in this ancient posture. More
New Cool Collective, this eight-member Amsterdam band also known in Hungary, made the small audience at Millenáris dance. They played in suits, like heroes from a Tarantino movie from the eighties. More
The aim of Babette Kleijn and Jan Adriaans is to live as lustful a life as possible. Their joint exhibition is at Lumen Gallery until 19 May. Our correspondent thought he had entered a lift. He has been falling ever since. More
